This month, we connected with Devin Vernick. Devin is an avid runner and cyclist, spending most of his time trail running in the mountains of Northern Utah and cycling long distances through the Salt Lake City valley. He’s trained in 100 total brands on ExpertVoice since he became a member in 2017, and there aren’t any signs of him slowing down. Check out our interview with him on his hobbies, advice, and favorite brands.
Let’s start off with an easy one: Where are you from?
I am originally from Denver, Colorado but I currently reside in Salt Lake City, Utah.
What do you do for a living?
I do two things: I’m an Instructor at the University of Utah and a Group Fitness/Strength and Conditioning Coach at a local Salt Lake City gym.
Who or what introduced you to cycling and mountain running?
I was introduced to cycling while living in Atlanta, Georgia, from 2008-2016. For context, Atlanta has a very active and vibrant road cycling/racing community, and what began as a social activity quickly became a nearly full-time sport. After moving to Salt Lake City, Utah in 2016, I aspired to spend more of my time in the mountains. This led me to a passion for trail and mountain running, which I still indulge in today. Being immersed in those environments and sharing those experiences with others is very important to me.
What is your favorite way to fuel your body prior to a long run?
I enjoy a nutritious breakfast of granola, oat milk, dried fruit, a banana, nut butter, and coffee. During and after a long run or ride, I like to have Gnarly Nutrition or SANs Bar products.
Where is your favorite location you’ve ever run or ridden?
I’ve really enjoyed Big Cottonwood Canyon in Salt Lake City, and La Sal National Forest in Moab, Utah.
Do you have advice for anyone looking to seriously get into these hobbies?
I have a few good points. First, be patient with your body —start slowly and add distance very gradually. Second, don’t focus on speed —instead, focus on time and how you feel after a run or ride. Last and most importantly, prioritize rest and recovery—that is training in itself.
What are your favorite brands on ExpertVoice and why?
- Continental Tires: By far the most durable and versatile tire I have ever ridden on, serving me well on long-distance bike rides.
- Zeal Optics: These plant-based sunglasses fit well and look great.
- Gnarly Nutrition: This local brand offers simple nutrition solutions that taste great and work well with my diet.
- SANs Meal Bar: The cleanest bar with the most protein you’ll find anywhere. What a great brand!
