I was able to put these axes to the test at this year’s MI Ice Fest and they did not disappoint! I was looking for an entry level ice axe without breaking the bank but also something that I could reliably climb steep ice with. Everything about these ice axes has made my foray into ice climbing easier and enjoyable. One thing that stands out is the cost of the tools compared to other competitive brands. Do not be fooled, the Bandit can hang with the best of them. At 2lbs a piece, the Bandit feels exceptional in hand and on the wall with a perfectly weighted head for solid pick placements. The plastic handle is firm and feel good in the hand. This is especially helpful on colder days as the plastic does not get cold like the rest of the shaft. The hole on top of the pick fits most carabiners but is not as large as some of the other competitive offerings. It also does not have the offset lower handle which has become popularized by models like the Petzl Nomic. This has not impeded my progress in any way and the handle and finger catch of the Singing Rock Bandit function comfortably / ergonomically. Actually, this design lends itself to being used as a walking axe on steep approaches which I utilized extensively on the steep northern Michigan trails. Eventually I will likely get an axe with an offset handle as such models offer an even more downturned and secure experience the more vertical the ice gets. But these Bandit axes are so versatile that I believe they will stay in my arsenal for a while.
