Awesome

I’ve been really impressed with the Outdoor Research Foray 3L rain jacket. It strikes a great balance between durability and comfort—solid waterproof protection without feeling stiff or bulky. The breathability is noticeably better than most rain shells I’ve used, especially when I’m active. It works well for everyday wear as it does outdoors. Consumers go out and buy this jacket as it is great.

Keeps me dry in the PNW

The PNW has had an unusually warm winter, but still wet as usual. This coat has kept me perfectly dry, and the huge armpit vents have helped keep me cooler and dry from the inside, as well. I love this coat.

10 out of 10 on waterproofing, it has kept me very dry and the jacket looks like it will be bombproof construction wise. I wish the jacket was longer - it ends right at my waist and with a pack on it cinches up even higher. My main complaint is the hood. It fits great with a helmet on, but otherwise I find my vision is often obstructed just enough to be annoying. The shoulder articulation is a little off for me and I wish I had a little more movement without the sleeves riding up, but that’s me nitpicking. I’m still happy with it overall.

Great shell

This is probably the best rain coat I’ve owned. It has a little stretch and fits well (I’m 6’4, 250 and got the XL). Sheds rain nicely and has a smooth finish. Not nearly as crinkly as my arcteryx beta

I've worn this rain jacket in both heavy and light rain showers and I stayed dry in every every instance. i appreciate the material that lines the interior as it makes the coat easy to put on and take off. It also keeps me from feeling sticky. My only comment that's not high praise is the sizing. the material doesn't have any give, so be sure to select the appropriate size for how you intend to wear the jacket. If this is a shell or you want to layer, I'd recommend sizing up as it can get a bit snug.

Fit is slightly baggy. Material is a little ridged. I am hoping it soften over time as it’s a little obnoxious with the baggier fit. It does seem durable and will last. The side zip vents help dump moisture and the jacket does not wet out. Overall quite happy with the quality for the price.

Better than most light rain jackets

OR’s ascentshell fabric is NOT as robust in its weatherproofing as Goretex but is more breathable. This is a great jacket for off and on rain or short stints in hard rain. A practical jacket for the majority of us and MUCH better than the coated PVC nylon jackets. Goretex is king BUT the breathability of ascentshell is a worthy trade off.

Good water proof jacket

Water proof. I hunt in pnw and jacket is great for the woods. I would recommend. Thin enough to work out in. I put a a sweatshirt underneath for when it was cold

I have taken this jacket on many extended backcountry hitches, hunting trips, and ski touring missions in and around Idaho and Montana. It is highly durable with functional/ thoughfully designed vents and zippered pockets. While I wish the waterproofing had lasted longer I was impressed with its performance in multi day slogs through rain and snow.

Thing is awesome

Expert Recommendation Content I use it at shooting matches in the Pacific Northwest it’s the best jacket I’ve used in a long time. Very affordable ORs version of *pretext is better without the *ortex tax. Would recommend

Great DWR, love the poncho pit zips, and generally very happy with the fit / quality / finish. Very useful for warm days skiing / touring, definitely recommend it.

Almost perfect.

Only thing missing is a two way front zipper. I don’t know why every jacket with pit zippers doesn’t have the torso flow venting. Serious game changer. No need for drop pockets.

Super nice rain jacket ive taken it camping to school and work and have never been wet. I love the adjustability of the hood and for the price point it stacks up amazingly to other high priced goretex jackets.

Great quality. Great deal.

OR makes great kit. I’ve used this jacket extensively in the rain. It is truly waterproof. That sounds like a dumb comment about a rain jacket but I think anyone that knows anything about rain gear knows that just because something is labeled rain jacket or waterproof, doesn’t always mean it’s true. I couldn’t be happier with this. I have this one in blue and a second (different model) in tacti-cool green.

Great jacket for any rain

Did a lot of research before purchasing another rain jacket. This one is great. Looks great and performs to a high level. Needs to be paired with a winter jacket if used in cold weather. Holds out water in ANY amount of rain. Been in constant rain for about 3 hours in the jacket and it never soaked through. Folds up nice and small for its size too.

Great fit and performance

Love this jacket, it is a perfect option for rain as well as layering underneath. I am typically between a Large and an XL, went with a Large here and love the fit.

Comfortability in Harsh Weather

The jacket is very light, and breathable. It has been a wonder in the rain in Seattle and would definitely get another one. Only problem I had was the sizing for me felt a little small to what I usually, yet it’s an amazing jacket if you would like to layer up under it recommend going a size up.

Great All Around

The Foray is a great rain jacket. OR never disappoints, I’ve had this as a rain check for two years now and it’s great in warmer climates with lots of rain to moderately cold temps. I’ve worn this near the Arctic Circle to the coast of southern Alaska in the summer and it’s held up well. It’s flexible enough that it doesn’t present as a Hard Shell but light enough that if I need to layer I can. My main gripe is it’s a bit straight fitting, not athletic or tactical. So it tends to “swish” on me and annoys me slightly when hiking. This isn’t a huge issue as nothing catches to cause gear issues, but an odd feeling at first. Plenty of use on extreme terrain in the mountains. This can definitely take the punishment of a family man with kids in tow.

Great breathable outer layer that protects from rain and wind.

Expert Recommendation Content I’ve worn this a few times and one was in some moderate rain and I stayed completely dry. Definitely protects from the wind and I also do like that the arm pits have the zip option! Pros: lined zippers, armpit zippers, lightweight. Cons: haven’t found any yet.

Tested by Weather and Questionable Decisions

I’ve used the Foray 3L both casually and in the field, including one rain-soaked hunt that got a little western on the drive out. In most conditions, this jacket does exactly what it’s supposed to do: it keeps the rain out and your morale mostly intact. In anything short of a truly serious storm, it performs really well. During the kind of sideways, spiteful rain that feels personal, I couldn’t tell whether the bit of moisture I noticed was rain forcing its way in or just the universe reminding me who was in charge. Either way, that level of weather would have humbled most jackets. It’s comfortable, functional, and doesn’t scream “technical shell” when worn around town, which I appreciate. The ventilation actually works, the fit is sensible, and it holds up when conditions go from inconvenient to mildly chaotic. Final verdict: a solid, trustworthy rain jacket that handles real weather and questionable decisions with equal competence. If your definition of “rain” occasionally includes regret and poor forecasts, this one’s worth a look.

I have used this jacket for everything since I got it. Rain, wind and snow - it will stop it all. Very basic features on the jacket, but what it does, it does well.

perfect heavier weight rain shell. fit is great with plenty of room to layer, and a generous hood for a helmet etc. slightly loud for bowhunting in calm conditions, but youll have that with a rain shell.

Quality Budget Rain Jacket

Great jacket and didn't have to break the bank for it! Nice durable materials with quality functional accessories. Water proof zippers, cooling vents and zippers to allow a pack waist strap to go around the right spot without the jacket being bunched up.
