The Best Clipless Option

I've dabbled in SPD, flats, and these crankbrothers pedals for 10 years. The Mallet LS feel the more secure and less "floaty" compared to SPD, and provide some sort of platform if you become unclipped. The secure feeling is adjustable with the removable pressure plates. If you are racing or just trying to go fast, and especially if you like clips, buy these. You will not be disappointed. I chose the long spindle (LS) version so my feet clear the chainstays on my bike. Glad I did because I still have heel rub, just not as bad as if it were the regular mallets.

Fantastic Pedals

Despite having been mountain bike racing and casually riding for 6 years, I've stuck solely to the cheap 30 dollar shimano spd pedals with a small platform. Having these pedals now for a month, I've learned what I love about them. First they are amazing in clearing mud with the open cleat design. Along with this, the cleat allowing for clipping in 4 spots as opposed to 2 is well received. The 6 pins aid in grip on the pedals all while making it not too challenging to unclip. That was my biggest concern switching from spd to crankbrothers, but I'm glad I did!

Great clipless mountain bike pedals!

Expert Recommendation Content I just switched from flat to clipless pedals on my enduro mountain bike and I’m so happy I did. I paired the crankbrothers mallet e pedals and mallet shoes and they work like a dream! Easy to get in and out even with the standard release cleats. These pedals provide a nice platform with lots of traction in case you can’t get clipped back in right away. The pedals also seem sturdy, looking barely used even after a few pedal strikes on rocks. The long spindle version is perfect for my wider stance and feels much more comfortable than the standard pedal spindle length.

Great pedal

I’ve been riding on crank brother pedals ever since they came out. I have the egg beaters on my hardtail and have used the mallets on my full squish. I like the fact I can replace the bearings easily with a refresh kit. About every couple years I end up changing them, but it’s a breeze. I really like the long spindle version because it gives you just a little more clearance on your heel to the rear of the bike. Solid feel, I ride them clipped 95% of the time, and when it’s on the super sketch stuff and I have to unclip, I still feel pretty well planted on them, especially if you turn the pins out a little more.

Guess I'm a SPD guy

I have been a Shimano SPD guy since they came out. I recently went to flat pedals, and loved the feel of them but was looking to get best of both worlds with these platform / clip in pedals. I struggled to get used to the additional float afforded by crank brothers, and lack of release tension adjustability. If you are on Time, other crank brothers, any pedal with more float than SPDs you will be able to transition over to these very quickly. The seem like great pedals, and felt like what I was looking for. They absolutely give you the feel of a plat form under you when utilizing the 5 10 clip in shoes. I found, that even with a shim on the cleat the 5 10s were still pretty tight on the pedal, requiring me to screw the pins most of the way in, other wise it was very difficult to move my foot. I think with a little time dialing these in, they would be great. I gave them an 8 as I like less float in my clipless pedals, and also as you will need to spend a good bit time initially setting them up to be comfortable for you / your shoe you are using.

Like glue

Had to upgrade after the old Candies took a beating. I went with the LS after other reviews advised it was the way to go with a 5.10 shoe. Set up took a few trial and error attempts to figure out cleat spacing - used the spacer with 10 degree release cleat placement. Clicking in is not as quick from the Candies but once you are clicked in, wayyyy more secure! I was floating around before and now feel locked on like I'm running flats. No knee issues with the longer spindle and I like the wider stance. I've been happy with them so far and they are holding up to no rain summer rock abuse.

Solid Platform

My rating is more for the failure of losing a screw attaching my cleat to my shoe. Not the pedals fault. I have ridden these pedals on two seperate days and have no issues with them. Solid platform using with or without cleats. I find it somewhat difficult to engage while in forward motion (lack of riding), I am excited as these are my first MTB clipless pedals (I use clipless on my roadie.) Can we stop calling them Clipless pedals/systems yet? They are the opposite of the name... I look forward to solving the screw issue and giving these pedals hell!

Expert Recommendation Content The Mallet E LS are very sturdy, and provide a very stable platform clipped in or unclipped. The float in the mechanism is great for moving around on the bike, and is said to help with knee pain. I’m liking the long spindle version for the wider stance on the bike - they definitely feel planted through the rough stuff.

Awesome clip with platform stability

Loving these pedals. The clips are easy to get in and out of once they’re properly adjusted. The platform also give enough grab on your shoe, that if you dont get clipped in right away, you can get through a techy bit and then get your clips settled. Would highly recommend for someone looking for a good all round pedal.

Stable platform and easy entry

Upgrade from spd's. First time with CB eggbeater design, after a season of riding the platforms have held up well and the added support stability underfoot has made descents much more comfortable and controlled. The platforms have taken a beating but the eggbeaters are well protected. Once I found the right cleat placement clipping was easy. These have been one of my favorite upgrades.

An excellent AM/Enduro pedal, with plenty of range of motion. However, it can get finicky to unclip, especially when the spring gets jammed with dust/dirt (which is often, out here in Colorado). I've had more than a few embarrassing (and sometimes painful) slow speed tumbles due to getting stuck in the pedals. Some dry chain lube helps get the mechanism working like new again.

Coming form a set of XT pedals I found this much easier to clip in a hurry and to get back in mid ride if I put a foot out. They held much more securely than the XTs but don’t come out as easily and will stay clipped in during smaller falls which is not ideal and can pin you after the fall.

The pedals are easy to clip into even when you're getting on the bike and about to drop into something gnarly. The platform is great for adding stability to your shoes during long bumpy descents. I was using crank brothers Candy pedals previously, but as I started venturing into aggressive trail riding and Enduro racing, they were not the best option.

Great pedals

These pedals feel amazing and hold grip really well when I go down gnarly stuff and don’t want to be clipped in. I”m still new to clipless and these have been a great translation, however I have noticed my knees hurting more since I’ve installed the pedals. I’m trying to adjust and had my shop set them up from me but I may not continue to use them if pain continues.

Best aggressive clipless pedal

Fantastic pedals for those that want to an aggressive pedal they can take on enduro races and DH courses while staying clipped in. I have been riding them a couple years now and despite constant pedal strikes have held up remarkably well.

Great pedals

Solidly built and great flexibility. Can use them like a standard clipless pedal or like flats. Had to adjust the pins to allow room to clip in. Once that was done they are stable and reliable.

Once you practice in them and adjust them, they’re really good- in snow, mud, and grit. If you like the feeling of being “locked in” when you ride, you’ll really like the mallets.

Hybrid Pedals!

Gets a 7 for how hard they are to release (Tension all the way down). Best of clipless and flats in one package. Wear them with FiveTen Kestral Pros and Vans, both bite well enough.

Glued to the bike! Signigicant increase in contact and control over XTR Trails.

Not as easy to get in and out as SPD's, but that's kind of the point. Will need some time to break in before exiting pedals is reasonable. Having cleat tension adjust with SPD's will be missed.

Great clueless option

If they could somehow combine this with the shimano retention system ( adjustability) they would be perfect- float is excellent and there is security when you clip in.

New to clipless

1st venture into "clipless", mostly urban commuting. Took 1 ride to become familiar, but the pedals work great, either attached or just the platform. After the 3rd ride, super smooth transition. Quality pedals.
