Hybrid Design Sacrifices Trail Confidence

Expert Recommendation Content I used these pedals for a season and a half. They are functional but not ideal for trail riding. I bought these pedals so that I could work my way into using clipless at the local MTB trails. The flat side has adequate grip for riding jumps, roots, rocks etc. (In Central Minnesota). The clip side is fairly easy to clip and unclip. They’ve taken the abuse of 1.5 years well and would be a fine pedal for someone that does not need to clip in quick or can fish for their pedal briefly before applying power. My issue is that the pedal will often not have the side I intend to use facing up when I need it. When starting on a tough section of trail, or having to dab and keep goin, I’ll have to look down and either flip the pedal with my toe or cycles the crank one time to get the pedal facing the right way. I’m going to be buying a set of Mallet E pedals shortly to use this season. They seem to be designed for my purposes of riding.

Might get another pair!

I was new to clipless and wanted ones that were half clipless /half platform. There aren't too many options out there and I went with the Doubleshot2. For the newbies, it took me about 3 rides to get used to the clip in/out and i did have 3.487 falls....but it was totally worth it. I've had them now for a few years and about 2500 miles on them. Some of the paint has faded but they seem to be going strong and I love the 5 year warranty. No real complaints, although I'd love to see Crankbrothers develop some more pedals for the touring/gravel/road segment. I might try the Candy for my road bike and keep the doubleshots on the all purpose bike.

Versatile pedals

The Doubleshot is a great option for someone looking to do a serious fitness ride one day, clipped in, and run to the bar the next on the flats. Very versatile. I put these on my commuter and usually ride on the flats. Other reviews have said the flat side of the pedals doesn't have enough traction but I have never had any problems with traction, although it could be the shoes. I wear trail runners, merrell trail gloves and they stick great to these pedals. The clips are a bit tough and tricky at times but as I'm not racing with these on my commuter, they clip quickly enough and are solid on longer rides or when I bike-pack. Definitely recommend Crank Brothers and their gear for quality parts.

Bought to tackle both commute and long rides

I ride a Salsa Vaya, both as my commuter and for gravel riding. I ride the flats side to work with some Vans for work and clips for long rides. Coming from Shimano SPDs to CrankBrothers wasnt much of a change minus relearning the feeling of getting your clips lined up when starting off. My only complaint is that the flats seemed a little slick, even with the small "pins" that are molded into the metal frame. If you need one pedal to do it all and dont want to wear clipless all the time, these are the way to go.

Double shot is a good idea for someone wanting versatility or wanting to ease into clipping in. Took several rides to break in where clipping in became easy, but now is pretty seamless. The flat pedal side is nice for a casual ride around the neighborhood, but not enough grip to seriously consider for the trail; pretty slippery and the traction nubs really don't do the job even on soft/grippy soles. Having said that, I like the concept of being able to stay clipped in on a ride, but also to clip out and pedal for some more technical sections. I would recommend for the casual or entry level rider, but I will likely get a straight set of flat pedals with adjustable nubs for the riding I do now. I would absolutely recommend Crank Brothers for quality and function.

Great option for people new to cycling

Expert Recommendation Content I put these on my road bike. As a cycling beginner, I like having the option to go without bike shoes for more casual rides. The only thing I should have done differently is get the double shots pedals with the “easy release” cleat. After falling on my face a couple of times with the “standard release” cleats that come with, I bought a set of easy releases and would *highly* recommend them!

Great all-around pedal

Expert Recommendation Content Put the Crank Bros Doubleshot pedal on my bikepacking rig and immediately rode 650 miles on the GDMBR this summer. Clipped-in for all-day grind sessions and rode the flats into town with sandals for ice cream and french fries. A great combo when you want this type of flexibility.

I wanted a pedal that I could use on my hybrid bike to clip-in on my personal rides and to use with normal shoes when I go on a ride with my 6 year old. These for the bill and have worked great so far.

Best Commuter Bike Pedals

Ride to dinner in normal shoes or hit a longer ride & clip in. These pedals have been my go to for the commuter bike, these are actually my second pair. The flat cleats are a bit too slippery for a bit day riding flats on a mountain bike, but are more than enough for rides around town.

perfect for what I was looking for

I am new to clipless pedals and I like how I can have the option of flat or clipless - super easy! So far they function well and provide good traction on the flat side, although I haven't used them for anything too technical. Will definetely purchase again.

Never thought I'd want these

It took a bit of getting used to because, sometimes when going for the clip, I was on the wrong side. However, after maybe an hour of acclimating to them, it was a luxury I never knew I wanted. As always, superior build quality that you can expect from Crankbrothers...

Well made but too hard to clip in

Good hybrid design. Very difficult to clip into. Kinda make me hate them not gonna lie. But very solid and sturdy design. Just not nearly as easy as other pedals. Could be inherent to the hybrid design. Well made but not for me

Super nice platform side for times when you don't want to be clipped in, and the super sweet action of their egg beaters on the other side for when you're ready to hammer! Mounted on a Gary Fisher Sugar 2...

Solid and versatile pedal

While the flats side does not feature aggressive pegs, my shoe soles (and on occasion my shins!) appreciate not being beat up. If I want bombproof grip, I clip in. Well made and versatile.

It’s a phenomenal clipless/flat combo, but I think the flat side needs a touch more grip. Powder coating wouldn’t be a bad idea either to keep the color from fading. Overall one of the better combos pedals I’ve ridden.

Great split personality.

Good construction and I love the double sided design. Sometimes I want to ride with cleats and sometimes I just want to take a spin around the neighborhood. These pedals give me that option to just jump onto the bike with whatever shoes i have on.

Pedals work great on my road bike! The multi-use pedal allows you to ride flat for a casual ride or to clip in when you want to get after it.

I’m just starting to use pedals like this and I’m still having trouble and falling. I think these are great because I can use them like pedals still if I just want to go out and ride with my son.

Like this pedal a lot. Clips in pretty easy. The platform is a great for both styles of shoes but does not have very good grips.
