Growing up in Pocatello, Idaho, Jordan Harris was introduced to hunting at an early age, picking up archery when he was just 11. But instead of sticking to one discipline, Jordan pursued his passion for both hunting and shooting sports by expanding into rifle, shotgun and even 3-gun competitions.

I got into shooting sports when I was about 11 years old. I was introduced to archery, and it slowly progressed from there, going from hunting and then towards competition shooting as I got into high school.”

Today, Jordan hunts a variety of species — from elk and big game to upland waterfowl — across Idaho and Utah. Hear, in his own words, why Jordan loves being on ExpertVoice.

Why Jordan is an expert:

With over 9 years of experience as a combat medic and Cavalry Scout in the U.S. National Guard, Jordan knows firsthand the value of gear that won’t fail when it matters most. He also brings a unique perspective to equipment — not just from the field, but from the sales floor, having worked as a sales associate and team lead at Cabela’s.

Jordan says top-tier gear doesn’t necessarily mean a top-tier price tag.

Something I really wish I would’ve known when I was getting into hunting or shooting is that you don’t need the best equipment to get started. Having something that just gets you out there doing what you want to do is where you should start.”

Jordan’s go-to picks

Whether scouting in the backcountry or calling in game from the stand, Jordan has spent more than his fair share of time on the hunt. Here are a few of his favorite gear picks.

Athlon Optics Midas TAC GEN2

“Better than anything I own! I had the opportunity to shoot with one of these for the first time a bit ago. I was seriously impressed. I own a few scopes that cost a bit more than this, and the glass in the Midas Tac Gen 2 is better. I was able to shoot out to 1,000 yards for the first time, and with this optic, I didn’t have any trouble walking the rounds in to get my first impact at 1,000 yards on the third shot. I think it would be hard to beat for the price.”

Walther Tac R1C 22 Rifle

Fun way to plink! I really enjoy AR styled firearms, and to find this in .22LR has been great. It’s a super fun way to plink, or a great way to train for cheap. The only thing I’d change is the trigger. It has a heavy and gritty trigger pull.”

Athlon Optics Aluminum Tripod Midas AL28

Best buy of the year— I upgraded to this tripod after breaking my cheap Amazon one, and I wish I would have done it sooner. The arca plate with the ball head makes this beyond useful for use with a spotting scopes or firearms.

Chasing more than game

Jordan’s insights reach beyond product recommendations and gear reviews. He shared the importance of appreciating hunting and being in the outdoors for the experience that it is, rather than focusing on what you bring home.

My most memorable hunt, by far, was last year. I went bow hunting with my brother for whitetail deer for the first time, which is not as common in this part of the state. It was so fun, even though we didn’t harvest anything, and it was just really special.”
