When Neyra Rosa isn’t running the trails or competing in marathons or ultras, she’s sharing her passion for trail running in other ways — like with her customers at The North Face Outlet in Berkeley, California or through Black Girls Run, a running group that helps Black women and girls maintain healthy lifestyles. She’s also the co-founder of the Oakland Pride 5k Fun Run.

We sat down with Neyra to learn more about what fuels her love for trail running and talk about one of her most recent accomplishments — finishing the Catalina Island Marathon.

How did you get into trail running?

“I started running when I was in the Marine Corps — I joined the service when I was 18 years old. Running and having that structure helped me with both my physical and emotional wellness. Once I got out of the service, I continued to run and got more involved in trail because, well, that’s just my happy place. Just the act of being out there in nature – that’s where the passion comes from. When I’m not working, I’m usually out in the mountains somewhere.”

Can you tell me a little more about how you share running with others in your community?

“Through running, I’ve been able to make some great connections, get involved with some great groups and give back to my community and to a lot of BIPOC and youngsters. I’ve been able to use my platform to put on events and take people out to share my passion for running and nature, and it’s always an amazing thing when I’m given that opportunity.”

What do you love about getting to share your passion to help others?

“My favorite part is hearing people say things like, ‘I’ve lived here for 30 years and I never knew this was right in my backyard, wow, this is awesome.’ That touches my heart — to be able to share my experiences and the things I’m passionate about, as well as seeing other people appreciate them.”

What’s a recent achievement you’re proud of?

“One that pops into my mind right away is the Catalina Island Marathon I did in March. It was raining and raining and raining. The mud was sticky, it was over 3,000 feet of elevation and it was my first time doing it. The water was up to my thigh at certain points and it was crazy, but I still had the best time ever.”

What products helped you reach the finish line?

The North Face VECTIV Enduris shoes with the Futurelight waterproof bootie, Smartwool socks, Nuun Energy in Berry Blast, Honey Stinger energy chews and a Brooks Running Visor.”

What tips do you have for someone who is looking to get into trail running?

“When I first got into trail running, I volunteered for local trail races. I learned a lot from all the information given to me by the other volunteers, who were mostly other trail runners. I’d pick their brains while setting up, asking questions like, ‘What do you think about this? What gear works for you?’ That was a real game changer for me. I got so much information that helped me on my trail running journey, such as what to do, how to do it, what to wear, what to bring, how to hydrate, all those things.”
