In celebration of this summer’s games, we’re spotlighting an ExpertVoice member with an impressive Olympic career. Peter Newton’s journey in kayaking has taken him from the waters of Oahu to the world stage of the Olympics. We had the pleasure of catching up with Peter to learn more about his path to the Olympics, his experiences on the world stage, and his ongoing commitment to the outdoor community through his work at REI.

How did you get started in kayaking?

I grew up on Oahu and was always in or around the water doing various activities such as surfing and swimming. After high school, I joined the local canoe club, Hui Nalu, and started outrigger canoe paddling. I loved everything about paddling and raced as much as I could. While at the canoe club, I was introduced to open ocean kayak racing and then to Olympic Sprint Kayaking. Once I got into an Olympic racing kayak, I was hooked.

Can you share your experience of qualifying for the Olympics for the first time?

The first time I qualified for the Olympics was amazing. I had just turned 22 and was racing against the top kayakers in the country and the world. I was nervous but excited and remember putting my head down and the next thing I knew I’m across the line and had qualified for the team. I came in 2nd place in the 500-meter singles and 5th place in the 1000-meter singles.

What was it like competing at three Olympic Games and being part of the international sports community?

Being part of the international sports community and competing in three Olympics was incredible. Getting to train and race with competitors from across the world is an experience I will never forget. I love the values of the Olympics: excellence, respect, and friendship. Beyond the competition, I became good friends with many international paddlers and enjoyed visiting their homes, meeting their families, and seeing their countries.

What’s your favorite part about being out on the water?

I love the feeling of being on the water, it refreshes me. I stop thinking about anything else and just focus on moving my boat forward.

What gear has helped you achieve your level of success? Any specific brands or products that have been staples?

Besides my boat and paddle, the gear that helped me the most was PowerBars and Oakley sunglasses.

What has your experience been like working with REI, and what do you love about being part of a mission-driven, outdoor-focused organization?

I enjoy working at REI because I relate to the values of the company. I’m a believer in the benefits of the outdoors and how important it is for all of us. REI’s mission is to inspire, educate, and equip people for a lifetime of outdoor adventure and stewardship.

Why do you think it’s important for elite athletes to have close connections with the brands that build their gear?

I think elite athletes need to be able to trust in brands and the gear they use. It’s important to know how the gear is made, and the care companies put into their products and the environment.

What advice would you give to athletes at any level who are striving to achieve their goals and improve in their sport?

Work hard, be consistent, enjoy the moment, have a plan and follow it.

What’s been the highlight of your experience using ExpertVoice?

The great thing about ExpertVoice is the variety of products and companies. It’s also really easy to shop from.
