Living in Bishop, California, a small city located on the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada, Andrea Daniels is surrounded by an abundance of trails — and opportunities to hone her backpacking expertise. But her passions are as expansive as the mountain range itself. Andrea skis, hikes, kayaks, mountain bikes, you name it. And she’s just as devoted to finding the best gear for every activity (and sharing it with friends, coworkers at the hospital she works at and other experts).

What first drew you to backpacking?

Well, an amazing man [Andrea’s partner] got me into it. He got me into a variety of different sports in the Sierra. I’m addicted to backpacking. Wouldn’t have it any other way.”

What makes you an expert in backpacking?

“What makes me an expert is the [time I’ve spent in the] Sierra. You learn fast, you learn from your mistakes, and you don’t make them again. I also feel that ExpertVoice has been a huge asset in me becoming an expert in backpacking.”

What’s a recent achievement you’re proud of?

“One of my recent achievements that I’m extremely proud of was when I did a multi-day backpack from Agnew Meadows to Tuolumne Meadows. It took me approximately four days. I did it alone, and it was the most amazing time of my life.”

What products helped you with your solo backpacking trip from Agnew Meadows to Tuolumne Meadows?

“I had different items that helped me with this goal: the Vortex Sun Slayer Hoodie, Smartwool hiking socks, Outdoor Research Ferrosi Pant and I brought along the Garmin inReach Mini — it keeps me safe.”

Andrea’s picks: Vortex Sun Slayer Hoodie, Smartwool Hike Light Socks, Outdoor Research Ferrosi Pants, Garmin inReach Mini Satellite Communicator.

What tips do you have for someone who is looking to get into backpacking?

“One of the number one tips I would give to a fellow hiker, or to a new hiker, is to get an inReach Mini from Garmin. It’s really important that you stay in touch with your loved ones. It’s important that you stay safe. And then, if something should happen to you, you have the S.O.S. feature to help you if you need it.”
